Students are taught by well trained qualified teachers supported by well designed curriculum which is constantly being evolved to stay tuned with the latest trends. We have prepared our own schedule wherein students are taught with a targeted approach. This pursuit of excellence extends beyond the classroom. On the sports field and across our huge range of cultural and leisure activities, every child has endless opportunities to discover his/her nascent talents and is encouraged to set and pursue his/her personal goals. The basic aim is to develop the child in all aspects of disposition, attitude, self-confidence and self-control.

Individualized Instruction

We try our best to recognise our scholars individually to help them in overcoming particular learning difficulties through individualised instructions. Group learning in classroom situation is supported by audio-visual aids.

Assessment

As with the other academic programmes assessment is both Formative and Summative.

Individual portfolios of student achievement are kept which serves as an important mechanism for documenting progress. However, there is no formal examination till Foundation Stage-III, we keep accurate records of what your child is doing at school and base the academics on individual skill and interest. We do have report cards and have parent/teacher conferences each year and work hard to establish open communication with every parent. Setting goals for success at school is important and we take into account every child’s family expectations and wishes, as well as the child’s own interests and abilities.

There is a concerted effort to establish a fit between the teaching styles and methodology and the learning patterns of our students. Great care is taken to ensure that personalized and customized action plans are drawn up to accommodate those with special requirements. Parents receive a comprehensive report that includes a qualitative assessment of all those aspects outside the scope of the classroom.

Syllabus Guidelines

Learning is an ongoing and continuous experience and every small nugget of information adds to the children’s general awareness of the world around them. The syllabus has been planned to give a rich educational environment to the children without burdening their minds. It is a creative blend of contemporary and conventional methods and the school is projected as an ‘Open Book’.

The students are given ample opportunity to learn from their immediate environment in which even the plants and building become the educator’s teaching aids. There is special emphasis on current affairs and knowledge of major events which form a major section of the curriculum.

FY Curriculum

  • Language Development

    • Encourage children to listen and respond to questions and instructions
    • Learn the phonic sounds of alphabet, children to know the sounds of letters, not just the letter names
    • Increase the vocabulary by learning new words that begin with each alphabet
    • Sing nursery rhymes and songs
    • Children to use their voice in different ways and to play with sounds, making animal, vehicle noises.
    • Read stories with rhyming and rhythmic patters
    • Play games such as ‘I spy’ and look for colours and objects in the environment Use a variety of ways to familiarize children with the letters of the alphabet for example using play dough, writing in the sand or outside with large chalks, on large pieces of wall tiles and with paints.
  • Reading

    • Read two and three letter words with the help of phonic sounds.
    • Use sight reading through label reading, display key words around school to build the child’s sight vocabulary
    • Look at words and print in the environment; Encouraging students to read road signage’s, grocery labels like butter, cereal, cheese, chips etc.
    • Read a range of stories; poems, traditional tales, stories with patterned language, magazines and nonfiction books.
    • Re-read favourite stories again and again
    • Encourage children to make up their own stories through imaginative play
  • Writing

    • Initially, children will be guided to develop their gross motor movements on a larger scale before they will be able to do it on a smaller scale.
    • Children to trace letters but will be encouraged to have a go themselves.
    • As the child’s phonics skills develop, encourage them to write words with the letters that they can hear when reading.
    • Do family words, rhythmic words, word chains, opposites, and simple grammar rules.
  • Numeracy Skills

    • Counting of objects
    • Sing number rhymes and songs
    • Try to develop children’s vocabulary to include words such as more, less, heavy, smaller etc
    • Teach children about the properties of shapes such as “It has three sides and three corners” rather than just learning the name ‘triangle’
    • Understand the ‘Ones’ and ‘Tens’
    • Simple addition and subtraction: looking for key words- less/ more, take away / give etc
    • Talk to children about time and point out the numbers on the clock
    • Make estimates, guesses, and seriating by quantity or size.
  • Understanding the World

    • Encourage children to be inquisitive and observant
    • Answer their questions and give explanations wherever possible
    • Provide a variety of sensory and tactile resources to play with
    • Encourage them to slide, spin and swing on climbing ladders and frames.
    • Explore sports equipement like bats, balls, hoops, trampoline.
    • Point out to children foods that are good and bad for us and explain why
    • Encourage children to be aware of their own needs and to suggest ways of dealing with this. For example recognising when they are hungry, thirsty or in need of washroom.
  • Information and Communication Technology

    Point out technology. for example; Overhead projectors, smart boards, CCTV, lap tops, copier machines and mobile phones. Ask children to share their ideas; what do they think they are for? How do they think that they work?

    Lab work, basics and use of tux paint.

  • Visual and Performance Arts

    • Free hand Drawing, respect for boundaries, stroke development and colour appreciation.
    • Encourage children to dance and move to a variety of music and rhythms
    • Encourage children to imitate and role play as a character from a story
    • Use figures and animals to tell stories inspired from known stories or created from imagination.
    • Provide children with a wide variety of materials to explore including; paints, pastels, crayons, clay, dough, glitter.

Home Work Policy

At The British School, Panchkula we aim to provide opportunities for children to develop skills and attitudes for successful lifelong learning. As our school we work with parents in partnership, engaging them in their child ’s learning wherever possible. Home work is a fundamental part of every child ’s learning ensuring skills, concepts and ideas are embedded for the future.

The aims of Home Work are:

  • To consolidate what the children have already learnt in school;
  • To develop children’s independent learning skills;

Expectations

At TBS we expect all children to value the whole learning experience offered to them.

  • All pupils must make an effort to complete Home Work.
  • When Home work has been given as a reinforcement tool , the teacher will look to see your child’s level of understanding. If a child has shown that they do not understand they will be given further guidance and support.
  • We expect all ch ildren at TBS to speak English with confidence and seek support for the same at home.
  • We provide a variety of Home Work to include: Writing Practice, reading books and questioning , phonics practice , specific literacy and numeracy practice focused on consol idation of previous learning , projects and activities.

At TBS we believe Home Work is important since it helps secure class learning and develop a thirst for knowledge. However, other than teacher given work, productive activities at home may include rea ding, attending dance / music classes, taking responsibility for a family pet, doing simple house hold chores, playing a board game, visiting a Museum, going swimming etc. All of which are invaluable developmental activities. Children also need time after school to play, socialize, relax and re-energize. Parents can let the child’s teacher know if Home work has not been completed for any reason, or if it is too difficult or too easy. The best way to do this is through SchoolPad.

FOUNDATION YEARS (Children aged between: 2.6 - 6 years)

It is important to understand that no two days are same in the Foundation Years. Each day is structured to include a combination of teacher led activities working with small groups of students, independent directed activities and child initiated learning. Activities are play based and children are encouraged to understand and enjoy the process of learning. Some activities take place in the classroom and others in the outside areas so that the children have access to different resources during their day.

The school day starts around 8:00am and children come into the classroom after the morning assembly. The school day finishes around noon and the children are supervised until they are collected. Please be prompt as your child is eager to see your face amongst the waiting crowd!

During the school day the children have the opportunity to visit other areas of the school such as the atrium for story telling or reading, the music room for singing, the hall for dance, aerobics and stage play, the sand pit for free play, splash pool for fun times and swings for unadulterated joy. They will also visit the library to browse books and the computer lab to develop their PC skills ( FY-3 onwards). Every few days you will receive a personalized diary note from your child’s educator keeping you abreast of his

STAGES (Children aged between: 5 - 11 years)

Teaching at Stages is student-centered, project-based, and incorporates the multiple intelligence concept. While the International curriculum is followed by every student, he or she is also encouraged to develop talents and interests in personal areas of academic interest, and in sport, theater music and dance, for which facilities are outstanding. Homework is given to encourage and develop independent study skills and to complement particular fields of study.

We aim to give students a broader, deeper, richer educational experience by recognizing each student’s strongest talents and building on them in order to ensure that all the areas of talent are developed. Different individuals have different aptitudes. By using the strongest aptitudes or “intelligence” as a starting point we can educate more effectively by teaching different students the same topic in different ways according to their particular “intelligence”:

House system

The students are divided into 4 houses – Edward, George, Henry and Richard. On Wednesdays and working Saturdays the children will wear the House uniform. Various House wise activities are conducted to inculcate competitive spirit amongst the students.

Beyond Academics

All the activities are planned keeping in mind the current scenario. They are creatively organised and focused on the enhancement of general knowledge.

The school provides a wide choice of co-curricular and sports activities. A wide array of activities are offered to students at TBS, and student enthusiasm can lead to the foundation of even more. These activities contribute to the liveliness and energy of the campus:

CURRICULUM

Stage I

The child in Stage I in on the threshold of formal education.  Our curriculum is equipped with curiosity- driven tools and deep understanding of the subject, as well as a critical approach and skills relevant to the subjects add to our brownie points.  Several concepts in Languages i.e. English and Hindi are incorporated for a good take off. Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Information Technology, General Awareness go hand in hand to form a strong foundation, where the child can spread his wings and soar high. General Awareness is an in house resource which is thematically compiled on monthly basis. This produces an  awareness for a wider knowledge. Clubbed with academics is a plethora of activities in terms of skating, martial arts, dance, visual and performing arts.

Stage II

Learning is an ongoing process. Our teaching is informed by the very latest research findings and our syllabus constantly evolves to incorporate the latest techniques. All the subjects are taught using a variety of teaching and assessment methods. The syllabus in Stage II emphasizes on multiple intelligence where in the child is encouraged to develop talents and interests in personal areas of academic interest. The co curricular activities are a continuation of the previous year. The Mentors constantly encourage the children to bring in the desired confidence. By the advent of Stage II, the students can read independently and reading habit is inculcated by being a part of the school library.

Stage III

Stage III has a panoply of curriculum and activities, from logical Mathematics to Linguistics, Cartography to Scientific insight. Our hands on Science activities quench the curiosity and our Art projects spark the creativity. Sport ignites exuberance in children. An array of sports is provided. Skating, Sqay, Badminton, Cricket, Chess, Table Tennis to select and show their grit. French and Punjabi are the third languages introduced to have a local and global footing. The curriculum is designed to ‘epoch making’ of students into global citizens.

Stage IV

We aim to give students a broader, deeper, richer academics and activities oriented curriculum. Each year is an accretion of accomplishments. The strengths are polished and pruned and the weaknesses are motivationally turned into strengths. Around this time students start doing class projects independently and look forward to school excursions and tours. In keeping with our pioneering spirit of empowering young minds, we have incorporated skill development programmes in every discipline of studies. Integrating all these initiatives in the academic system, helps us in creating an “All Rounder Youth”.

Stage V

Learning in Stage V is designed to teach the students through a progressive learning experience. It is interactive, social, creative, innovative and learner oriented process. The students are encouraged to unleash their potential and recognize the ways of working together that would lead to good results. The teaching methodology involves consistency in approach in reinforcing the important life skill concepts. The child in honed to perfection which enables smooth transition to the senior level. Stress is laid on working independently and master fluency with words, the art of speaking, writing, reading and listening.

Stages VI to VIII

The students in Stages VI to VIII are prepared for success in life. They are given guidance on better handling of real life situations. Enhanced problem-solving and decision-making skills are imparted to the children. Major enhancement in the three critical skill aspects of thinking, social and emotional is taught to the students. The main focus is towards actualizing of one’s dreams. They are given a clear road map to identify individual challenge areas and are enriched on how to overcome them.  The students are engaged in Interactive Sessions in the classroom with open discussion, sharing of experiences and narrations on personal experiences. Weaving the tapestries of values, patterned on the rich, cultural heritage of our country, drawing inspirations from great lives and events occurring around daily life in the school environment is our constant endeavour.

Sports play a vital part in all round development and unwind today’s stress. Students have brought laurels to the school in individual and team games. There is a wide range of sports where in the children can show their interest- Cricket, Basketball, Badminton, Sqay, Chess, Carrom, Table Soccer. The students are sensitized towards social responsibilities and they always stand up for a cause.

Awareness programmes and Guest Lectures are a regular feature in the school. These help the children to keep abreast with the wisdom of the visiting guests.
